When it comes to beautiful places in the world, Haiti is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen. Santorini in Greece, Italy, France, Israel were all extremely beautiful, each for a different reason, but Haiti is up there with them in its own unique charm.
The disorganization that is Porte Prince has a beauty in the cacophony of smells, sounds, activity and energy. The momentum in Porte Prince looks similar to what an octopus on roller skates would look like. You feel like you just need to get out of the way and watch the rhythm and tempo of it until you can feel the cadence and pulse that is thrumming all-around you.
When you leave the hectic dissonance of Porte Prince for the higher elevations you encounter the beauty of the hills and mountains. At first you come to tan brown dirty mountains which eventually bring you to the scenic lush green mountains of Haiti.
All along the way, and in every region of Haiti you encounter the most beautiful part of Haiti – it’s people! Their smiles, their generosity of spirit, their resiliency – all work to create a beauty that is uniquely Haiti.
The believers in Haiti possess some of the deepest faith I have ever seen. Their faith in Christ is what sustains them so they can weather the storms, the earth quakes, the corruption of government, those things that so often comes in waves to try to buckle these beautiful people.
The handsomeness of the men, the unfettered beauty of the women, the delightful smiling faces of the children are so incredibly beautiful! It’s no wonder so many missions from around the world come to Haiti – once you encounter its beauty you can’t stay away!
I’m so very grateful that God allows me to be a part of Haiti Lifeline and the One Body Project. We don’t just give these people money and things, we give them the intangible – hope and potential. We give them fresh water, and buildings to worship in, which are often the center of a community. We give pastors and church workers encouragement and support. And in that corroboration, all of us feel the power of the Spirit enabling the work.
Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, and each encounter with Haiti that I have been privileged to have leaves me praising our creative God!
